Former Georgia governor undergoes surgery after fall

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. (AP) — Former Georgia Gov. Zell Miller is recovering from surgery for injuries suffered in a fall at a basketball game.

A statement from Miller's family says the 83-year-old Miller fractured his right hip and right shoulder after falling at a Young Harris College basketball game on Wednesday.

The statement says Miller underwent hip-replacement surgery on Thursday, and doctors believe he will make a full recovery.

Miller is a conservative Democrat who served two terms as governor during the 1990s. He was appointed to a U.S. Senate seat he held from 2000 until 2005.

Miller turns 84 on Feb. 24.
