Former Boxing Champ Murdered
ATLANTA, Ga. - Atlanta Police are hunting for two suspected robbers who shot and killed former boxing champ O'Neil Bell as he got off a Marta bus in southwest Atlanta on Wednesday morning. A second man was also shot by the suspects, but survived.
The violence happened in the 1800 block of Harbin Road around 12:30 a.m.
As Bell and the unidentified man walked home, a car rolled up and two men with guns jumped out, according to police.
"They had some sort of confrontation, verbal argument with Mr. Bell," Atlanta Police Lieutenant Charles Hampton said. "That's when we believe he was shot, and the 28-year-old man was shot as well."
According to police, the other male victim was shot in the hip and is now in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital. He was able to tell investigators that the robbers took his purse and cell phone and that the shooting occurred after they exited a MARTA bus.
Police believe robbery is the motive. They are now canvassing the neighborhood, hoping someone will provide a description of the men involved.
Police released video featuring a Red Chrysler PT Cruiser, believed to be connected to the crime. Investigators said four men were in the car, and the suspect vehicle was reported stolen. They think the suspects in Bell's shooting also committed crimes in East Point and Clayton County on Tuesday.
