Firefighters demonstrate best way to deep-fry a turkey
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - Thanksgiving is fast approaching and many Georgia residents are already planning the dinner menu.
Just in time for that, the DeKalb County Fire Rescue and the DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management held a demonstration Tuesday morning on how to properly deep fry a turkey.
It was held at the DeKalb County Fire Rescue Training Academy.
Firefighters talked about the dangers of deep frying a frozen turkey the wrong way, as well at as what safety precautions the Thanksgiving cook can take.
"This is demonstrating the right way to do it. We lowered it in slowly. We weren't in a rush. We used a thawed turkey, one that had been thawed out, every 24 hours for every four to five pounds. We seasoned it, prepped it, and we got it ready to deep fry," said Captain Eric Jackson, DeKalb County Fire Rescue. "Again, we're on our level ground. We got our reasonable eye protection."
Officials recommend cooks buy a device with a timer.
It is best to get rid of the grease after the food is done is to recycle it, but remember to not pour it down the drain.
