Fire forces 21 people from southwest Atlanta apartments

Fire had spread through one of the buildings in the complex off Old Hapeville Road.

Atlanta firefighters arrived to find flames shooting into the sky, and residents with small bags and loved ones outside, watching their homes burn.

Firefighters rescued a pet, and put the flames out. But the damage was done. Eight units were damaged and 21 people lost their homes.

Fire crews are now investigating what started this fire.

The Red Cross is assisting the 14 adults and seven children displaced.

In a wacky turn of events, a man was arrested at the scene. He apparently scrambled up a firefighter ladder into his apartment to retrieve some belongings.
