SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — The family of a Savannah State University student who was fatally shot in the school's student union has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the University of Georgia System Board of Regents.

Multiple news outlets reported Thursday that the lawsuit from the family of Christopher Starks' family was filed in Chatham County court.

Authorities have said 22-year-old Starks, of the metro Atlanta area, was fatally shot in August 2015 after an altercation.

The family's lawsuit says the school and university system failed to keep the campus safe and the university system had adequate knowledge of criminal activity on campus since 2008.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.

Officials from the Board of Regents and Savannah State University have declined to comment on pending litigation.
