DeKalb County police announced Wednesday they have filed murder charges against a man for the stabbing death of his cousin.

DeKalb County Police Public Information Officer Jacques Spencer confirmed the arrest of Steven Smith on a charge of murder for the early Tuesday morning stabbing death of 36-year-old Antonio Carter.

Police say Carter was stabbed multiple times at an abandoned home on North Hairston Road a little after 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Officers say Carter was able to stumble to a neighboring home after the stabbing. Medics rushed him to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta where he died.

The arrest confirms the fears of the aunt of the two men.

“This has been going on for years. I told them he is either going kill somebody or somebody gonna kill him,” Lilie Cage told FOX 5’s Aungelique Proctor on Tuesday.

Cage said she called DeKalb County Police Tuesday afternoon to turn in Smith who she claims suffers from a mental illness.

“So I wind up losing two nephews. One to paranoid schizophrenia," Cage said. "He always says something is after him or an aliens doing this. He saying he was protecting Antonio. But the thing about it. He was the one doing the damage to Antonio.”

The aunt said in the past, she called DeKalb Police, her nephew’s probation officer, and even the institution where Smith had been treated but no one listened.

“This could have been prevented if the system would have listen to me, if these police officer would have listen to me," Cage said. "From one nephew dead and another one about to be sitting in prison for the rest of his life. Now I got to call my baby sister.”

At the murder scene, detectives told FOX 5’s Kaitlyn Pratt multiple people stayed with Carter at the abandoned house.
