Death Row Inmate to be Executed
COBB COUNTY, Ga. - Georgia's oldest death row inmate will be executed in February. Brandon Astor Jones, 72, is scheduled to be put to death on February 2.
He was convicted in the 1979 murder of Cobb County convenience store manager Roger Tackett.
Later, a federal judge granted Jones a new sentencing hearing because jurors were improperly allowed to bring a Bible into their deliberation room. In 1997, Jones was resentenced to death.
In October 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Jones' appeal after the Georgia Supreme Court and the federal appeals court in Atlanta previously upheld his death sentence.
A second man man convicted in the killing, Van Roosevelt Solomon, was executed in 1985.
