College Park officer recovering after crash

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. - A College Park police officer is recovering after a vehicle slammed into his patrol car Monday morning. 

According to police, Officer Grant Fraker was on traffic duty on Interstate 85 northbound at 285 near Old National Highway when an SUV hit his car. 

"Typically on holiday weekends we make sure we have a heavy presence on our interstates and some of the highways that come through the city of College Park," said Chief Keith Meadows.  "It's a common practice in law enforcement and he was out running radar when the accident actually happened." 

According to Chief Keith Meadows, Officer Fraker  suffered serious injuries and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition. 

Investigators believe the driver who hit the officer, a male, fell asleep behind the wheel. That driver had just gotten off work when the wreck happened. He sustained minor injuries and was also transported to Grady. 

Officer Fraker is a veteran officer who has been with College Park police for about two years. 

The crash bookends what has been a difficult holiday weekend for the College Park Police.  Friday two officers were shot and injured when responding to a call. 

"That's the ebbs and flows of policing when you have--sometimes you have nothing that ever happens and then you have this onslaught of events that'll occur and sometimes it can be pretty devastating to a force," said Chief Meadows. 

Investigators with the Georgia State Patrol will review the crash and determine what charges the driver may face.
