Officials with Douglas County Schools said the teacher shot himself with a handgun around 7:15 a.m. Thursday while alone in the office of his classroom. At a news conference after the incident, authorities said there were no students or staff members present when the shooting took place.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said after shooting himself, the teacher was able to make contact with another employee who then called 911 for help. The teacher, who has worked at LSHS for more than 18 years, was flown from the school to a local hospital. At last check, officials said he was in stable condition.

School resource officers immediately responded to the shooting and helped secure the building. The few students who were on campus at the time of the shooting were moved to the gymnasium so they could reunite with their parents.

No other injuries were reported.

"The school system appreciates the thoughts and prayers of the community during this difficult time," Douglas County Schools said on Facebook Thursday night.

Officials said Lithia Springs High will be on a regular schedule on Friday.

Lithia Springs High School is located at 2520 East County Line Road in Lithia Springs.
