Decades of crumpling up the bags inside of cereal boxes to keep the contents fresh are over, at least they are for some Cheerios lovers. General Mills teamed up with Ziploc in an attempt to make cereal last a little longer, and possibly make it a little easier to pour out.

Big picture view:

On Tuesday, the two companies unveiled the Ziploc Pantry Seal bags that will go inside some boxes of regular Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios. In addition to being resealable, the new bags will feature what Ziploc is calling a "pour spout" that is designed to make filling a bowl a little easier than if someone were using a standard Ziploc bag.

What they're saying:

For years, some cereal fans have questioned why companies do not use resealable bags, with one Reddit user writing earlier this year, "They could of did this 30 years ago. People have been asking for ages."

General Mills Vice President and Business Unit Director for Cheerios Emilie Knox conceded in the statement that the traditional bag-in-the-box method had been frustrating for their customers, and they had been urging the company to come up with a solution.

"Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal takes a small, everyday cereal frustration and finally gives consumers the simple solution they’ve been asking for, making the whole routine easier and more enjoyable," Knox continued.

What's next:

Cheerios boxes with the new PantrySeal bags are already on sale, but shoppers should not expect to see them on store shelves for a while. For now, General Mills will only be selling the boxes on walmart.com. They are expected to be available nationwide over the next several months.
