Caught on camera: Thieves break into cars in Atlanta

ATLANTA - Criminals who concentrate on car theft are managing to mostly stay a step ahead of police.

Homeowners like Brooke Washburn, who has been a victim, is arming her home with a sophisticated camera system.

And her camera captured car thieves at work overnight. The team included women.

In Buckhead just after 3:30 a.m., the thieves are seen pulling up in two cars. They scurry to check door handles and find a BMW unlocked. In a matter of seconds, they get that car started. One door down there is a locked SUV in a driveway.

It doesn't take long for the unidentified individuals to climb inside and get that vehicle going.

Atlanta Police Commander Scott Kreher says it is difficult but not impossible to make an impact. Law enforcement has had its best success trying to predict and wait thieves out when they go into large parking decks and try to hit dozens of cars all at the same
