Call for Action stops ID theft victim from continued fraud
LITHONIA, Ga. - A FOX 5 viewer had her identity used falsely not once, not twice, but three times at the same big company. She'd had it. So, she reached out to Call for Action to get it to stop. We've all been lost in a big company's bureaucracy - feeling like no one hears us. And that's what happened to a Lithonia viewer.
"It first came about because I got a collection letter in the mail," Naeema James told us.
Ms. James found out that someone had stolen her identity and used it to get cable.
"The Internet provider contacted me via a collection agency telling me I owe them money for 20 cable boxes that we purchased for one apartment unit located in Conyers."
A bills, she remembers, being in the thousands. But, she fought back.
"I had to go through a whole process filling out police reports, filing an affidavit with the company," she said.
She says she reported her ID theft to the FTC and put a seven-year freeze on her credit report then it happened again.
"A couple of months later, after the first incident, I received yet more information from another collection agency that I had an account in arrears with this same company," she recalled.
And then it happened a third time. So, Naeema James, frustrated no one was hearing her, got folks to listen.
"When it was just me all alone I felt like i was being bullied."
Call for Action, our all-volunteer group who tackles problems for you that seem to have no resolution, got the Internet and cable provider to stop issuing accounts in her name once and for all.
Ms. James' advice?
"Don't go it alone. Call Call for Action."
