According to the Hall County Sheriff's Office, the man and his girlfriend were swimming in a cove adjacent to the bridge when the man became distressed, then went under the water and did not reappear.

Officials say the victim was swimming in an area not designated for swimmers.

Rescue crews searched the water, near Gainesville Marina off Dawsonville Highway, for the first hour after his disappearance. The investigation then transitioned to a recovery effort.

The 911 call for a possible drowning was reported around 3:15 p.m.

The victim has been transported to the DeKalb County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

His identity has not been released pending a notification of all family members.
