According to police, Laurie Morgan, 57, held her 4-week-old grandchild hostage at the Highland Corners apartment complex, which is located on Noble Forest Drive in Peachtree Corners. Police were called to the scene around 3 a.m.

Investigators said some type of domestic fight took place between Morgan, who was possibly intoxicated, and Christopher Massie, the baby's father.

Massie  left the apartment during the fight, telling Fox 5 "I left because she threatened to kill me."  That's when, according to police, Morgan grabbed the baby while holding a gun. Responding officers said at some point Morgan fired a round with the baby in her arms.

A SWAT team was called in just before 4 a.m. Investigators said they tried to negotiate with the grandmother for hours, but didn't hear from her.

The SWAT team eventually breached the door, entered the apartment and gained possession of the baby.

Gwinnett Police spokesperson Corporal Michele Pihera said no one was injured. "The suspect has been taken into custody without incident. The SWAT team was able to make entry into the home and rescue the child and reunite the child with his mother."

Police said the little boy was  checked out by EMS. His grandmother was taken into custody just before 8:30 a.m.  "When I heard he was alright I said amen", said Massie.

Morgan has been charged with aggravated assault and reckless conduct. She was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail and is expected to make her first appearance Thursday morning.
