Atlanta's streetcars accident record

Have you seen the streetcar rolling in downtown Atlanta? They have been up and running since the end of December. Officials revealed at a city council meeting there have already been seven accidents.

Council members looked on skeptically as streetcar managers said that number is not high for a brand new system.

They said motorists are not used to sharing the road with this type of vehicle which has not been in use for more than sixty years.

Council member Natalyn Archibong questions whether the city began service before every safety measure was put in place. For example, all the road safety markings had not been painted when the first car rolled down the track.

Managers said additional signs are in place now. And they said while some of the accidents likely could have been avoided, police did not have to issue citations to their drivers.
