Armored vehicle employee injured in ambush; $50K stolen

An attempted armed robbery outside a Kroger located in the 2600 block of Metropolitan Parkway SW near Cleveland Avenue in southwest Atlanta ended with the suspect in custody after a crash Monday morning, authorities said.

What we know:

SKYFOX 5 flew over the scene and observed multiple police vehicles and an armored truck near a Kroger store.

According to the Atlanta Police Department, a man ambushed an armored vehicle employee transporting currency just after 9 a.m. on Monday. 

The suspect fired at the victim, grazing his head, before fleeing in a Honda with a stolen money bag containing $50,000.

The employee was alert and breathing when officers arrived. 

He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

A lookout was issued for the suspect’s vehicle. Shortly afterward, the suspect was reportedly involved in a crash and arrested by Forest Park Police. Atlanta police confirmed his identity at the scene.

Kroger, which operates a store near where the ambush happened, released a statement following the incident:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim, as well as the victim’s family and friends. The safety and security of our customers and associates remain our top priority. We are deeply grateful to local authorities for their swift response, and will continue to refer all questions to them as they lead this investigation."

What's next:

A spokesperson for the FBI in Atlanta says the man will appear in court on Tuesday. They also said he will face federal charges. The suspect was identified through court records as 19-year-old Clinton Mayers.
