Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that sent a teenage boy to the hospital.

It happened around 8:30 p.m. in northwest Atlanta. Officers said they were tailing a stolen van when it ran off the road into a pole. Investigators said the teen fled the crash scene on foot.

The teen encountered a second officer behind the BP gas station on Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway. Investigators said the officer opened fire, hitting the teen in the shoulder. He was alert, conscious and breathing when he was taken to an area hospital.

Witnesses told police that the teen was not armed, but was holding up his sagging pants with his hands. Atlanta Police Major Adam Lee said a weapon was not found.

The officer was also taken to the hospital for a knee injury.
