13-year-old charged after stabbing LaGrange student with scissors

LAGRANGE, Ga. - A 13-year-old student was charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery after stabbing another student with scissors at Gardner Newman Middle School Monday. 

What we know:

A physical altercation between two 13-year-old students broke out around 2:40 p.m. at Gardner Newman Middle School, LaGrange police said. 

During the fight, one student stabbed the other several times with a pair of scissors, inflicting multiple injuries.

A school resource officer learned about the assault while investigating the incident and alerted the Criminal Investigation Department. 

Detectives responded to the scene, and officials charged the 13-year-old offender with aggravated assault, aggravated battery and disrupting a public school.

What we don't know:

Authorities have not released details regarding the current medical condition of the victim.

Investigators have not disclosed what prompted the altercation or whether the scissors were brought from home.
