New exhibit celebrates 20th anniversary of Atlanta Olympics
BUFORD, Ga. - It was one of the most exciting times in Georgia’s history, as athletes from around the world came to compete in the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. Now, a new exhibit commemorates the 20th anniversary of that historic summer.
The Olympics exhibit is open now at the Environmental and Heritage Center in Gwinnett County, and will continue through August 20. Center staff created the exhibit using items from private collections, including uniforms, a Paralympic torch, and pieces of track from the Olympic Stadium, along with interactive elements including “touch tables” with sports equipment. Staffers say the goal of the exhibit is to look at what the Olympics meant to the area, and specifically the role Gwinnett County played during the Games.
