Walking tour spotlights Tallapoosa’s haunted history: “Our town is small, but our history is vast,” says Tallapoosa-native Susan Pitts, “and I thought, why not a historical ghost walk?”
And with that, a business was born. Pitts is the owner and creator of Tallapoosa Ghost Stories: A Walking Tour, which takes guests to more than a dozen reportedly haunted places in the Haralson County town. Pitts say the majority of the stories came from speaking to longtime Tallapoosa residents (“She’s hang out at the grocery store and kind of stalk old ladies,” says friend Dana Rampey), and feature a mix of both area history and spooky stories. Stops along the 90-minute tour include the site of the first free public school in Georgia and the building that once housed the first funeral home in Tallapoosa. The tour covers about one mile, and is completely accessible to people of all abilities.
Good Day Atlanta’s Paul Milliken and photojournalist Blaze Meier spent some time in Tallapoosa, learning more about the town’s “haunted history.”
