“Hidden Gems” Week: Good Day Explores Georgia’s State Parks:  It’s the 85th anniversary of the Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites system – and to celebrate, Good Day Atlanta is going on a week-long tour of some of our area’s most beautiful and unique attractions.

Right now, Georgia State Parks is encouraging visitors to go on a “treasure hunt” – searching for the Hidden Gems of Georgia.  There’s a complete list of the “hidden gems” on the Georgia State Parks website, and it includes the Prohibition-era moonshine truck at Amicalola Falls State Park (in Dawsonville), the little-known cemeteries at Panola Mountain State Park (in Stockbridge), and the hidden homesteads at Red Top Mountain State Park (in Acworth).  Many of these “gems” are unknown to even frequent State Park visitors, and some Exist on little-traveled trails that are easy to overlook.

Good Day Atlanta’s Paul Milliken is spending the entire week searching for some of these Hidden Gems of Georgia.  Be sure to follow along on Good Day Atlanta, and on his Facebook and Twitter pages!  And here’s a list of Paul’s stops for the week:

Monday: Amicalola Falls State Park

Tuesday: Panola Mountain State Park

Wednesday: Indian Springs State Park

Thursday: Red Top Mountain State Park

Friday: New Echota Historic Site

MONDAY 5/16: Amicalola Falls State Park (Dawsonville, GA) – spotlighting the park and the blue tanker truck from the Prohibition Era

TUESDAY 5/17: Live from HIKE INN at Amicalola – I’m thinking on Monday, after the live shots, Blaze and I could hike back there and maybe spend the night (?) – then go live the next morning and talk about the experience.  Is this do-able/realistic?  Would we have cell signal from Hike Inn?

WEDNESDAY 5/18: Indian Springs State Park (Flovilla, GA) – live shots spotlighting this as one of the oldest state parks in the country

THURSDAY 5/19: Panola Mountain State Park (Stockbridge, GA) – live shots hiking to the park’s hidden cemeteries, whiskey stills, beaver dams, etc.

FRIDAY 5/20: Red Top Mountain State Park (Acworth, GA) – live shots showing the “hidden” homesteads on Homestead Trail
