Burgers with Buck: Atkins Park

While the sign out front says established in 1922, and the windows below read established in 1927, once thing is certain, Atkins Park in Virginia Highland is Atlanta’s oldest, continuously licensed tavern. (There’s a great story behind the discrepancy between the sign and the windows, but you have to click on the story to hear Sandra Spoon tell it herself.)

It is known as a great neighborhood watering hole, but make no mistake, it is much more than just a place to belly up to the bar.

While there are many great options on the menu, and the weekend brunch is very popular as well, it is their classic burger that drew our attention.

The Bruno Burger, named after former owner, the late Warren Bruno, has been on the menu since the mid 1970’s. Not only is it an Atlanta classic, but it’s a classic example of, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Trust us, it ain’t broke, and the test of time confirms that.

The Bruno Burger is not over done with toppings. Instead, it is a nice blend of just the right toppings that all come together to provide you the burger lover, with a memorable experience. It will also likely assure that you will come back for another at some point, as so many have done throughout the decades.

The pattie is large, 8 ounces. On top is provolone cheese, and a blend of sautéed mushrooms with sherrie and butter to give it a rich flavor. Add caramelized onions to the top, and lettuce and tomato to the bottom and you have the Bruno Burger. One bite, and you’ll know why it hasn’t changed in 40 plus years.
