Atlanta nonprofit collects gifts for domestic abuse survivors

The holiday season brings happiness to many with all its festivities, fun and quality time with
family. But beneath the glimmer, some battle domestic violence, a dark truth suffered throughout the year.

That's why Sheila Bailey is collecting gifts for domestic abuse survivors so they will know they're not alone.

"People kind of forget domestic abuse still happens," Bailey said.

Bailey, a domestic abuse survivor herself, founded the No Longer the Face Foundation, a nonprofit geared towards domestic violence awareness. This year, she decided to collect robes and slippers through her organization to give to domestic abuse survivors who currently live with their families in a local shelter. She says the idea came to her after remembering how the gifts she received from her own children helped her.

"Little did they know, that robe and slippers became my comfort," Bailey said. "[They] made me feel protected and comfortable in the chaos that was happening in my life at the time."

One of the first recipients of the gifts is LaTonya Colbert. She moved to Atlanta nearly three years ago to start a new life following abuse. She lives with family now but says No Longer the Face Foundation has been an integral part in her starting anew. She's also thankful for the robe and slippers.

"I can see myself holding onto this forever, not willing to let it go," Colbert said.
