White House shooting: Suspect killed after shooting at Secret Service; bystander injured

A gunman was killed in a shootout with the Secret Service outside the White House on Saturday, after officials said he took out a gun and started firing at officers. 

What we know:

The Metropolitan Police Department responded to the area of 17th Street NW and Pennsylvania Avenue around 6 p.m. on Saturday.

According to the U.S. Secret Service, a person walked up to a security checkpoint, pulled a handgun out of his bag, and started firing at officers. Officers shot back, hitting the suspect. A male bystander was also hit and suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

Paramedics took the gunman to the hospital and later died, the Secret Service confirmed. Police have identified the suspect as Nasire Best, 21, of Maryland.

No Secret Service agents were struck by gunfire during the shooting.

Big picture view:

The White House was briefly locked down after the shooting Saturday. President Donald Trump was inside the building when the shooting happened. Several journalists were also there as part of the press pool, sharing videos of Secret Service agents on the White House lawn in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.

What we don't know:

It's not yet clear whether the bystander who was hit by gunfire was hit by the suspect or Secret Service agents returning fire. He has yet to be identified.

What's next:

The officer-involved shooting is under investigation.
