Uber Driver Credited for Leading Police to Motel Shooting Suspects

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - Police said a tip by an alert Uber driver led them to the three men who they believe ambushed a group of day laborers at a Gwinnett County motel, robbing them and shooting one in the head.

It happened at the Days Inn on Glenn Club Drive near Stone Mountain around 4 a.m. The Gwinnett County Police said the men robbed the guests in Room 116 and then fled in one of their vehicles. Investigators said one of the men was critically injured after being shot in the head during the attack.

Investigators said the three men ditched the stolen car at a Waffle House along Highway 138 in Conyers and used Uber to drive to a home in Snellville. Something caught the Uber driver’s attention, prompting call to 911 to report the men.

"The Uber driver told the 911 operator he thought there was something suspicious about the men he had been hired to pick up. During his initial 911 call, he didn't say anything. He just left the line open. The operator called back and that's when he told her he dropped the men off at a home on Newton Crest Circle. Our officers responded, arrested one of the men without incident, but the other two took off on foot," Cpl Michele Pihera told FOX 5's Portia Bruner.

A woman at the home on Newton Crest Circle declined to comment about the men who were dropped off at her home, but she did acknowledge she was there when the police arrived to arrest them.

Police were able to arrest on of the men at the home, but the other two ran away. After an intense manhunt lasting several hours, police arrested the other two men off Scenic Highway around 11 a.m.

All three now face robbery, aggravated assault, and auto theft charges. Police said additional charges are possible if the victim dies from his gunshot wound
