SWAT situation shuts down highway
Police say the Snellville manhunt began as an officer-involved shooting.
SNELLVILLE, Ga. - A manhunt for a suspect who shot at a police officer stopped traffic on a Gwinnett County highway for hours early Monday morning.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says the incident started shortly before 3 a.m. after police received a call about a suspicious person near the 2,900 block of Summit Way in Snellville.
A female officer noticed a man who matched the description on Highway and went to talk to him. While she was questioning the man, officials say he lied about his name and birthday.
At some point, police say the officer and the man got into a physical confrontation where she ended up using her Taser. The man then allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots at the officer, who shot back in response before he fled into some nearby woods.
Shortly before 5:30 a.m., police say they had the suspect in custody and that he is being treated for hypothermia. The man had a handgun in his possession at the time of his arrest, officials said.
Neither the officer nor the suspect was injured in the shooting.
During the manhunt, officials closed both sides of Highway 78 near Summit Chase Drive. The lanes have now been reopened.

The suspect has been identified as 43-year-old Shawn Davis of Kentucky.
