Spalding County Sheriff Darrel Dix identified the man killed in the incident as former county worker, 48-year-old Guy Scott Jr.

Dix said two deputies responded to a house on Collier Lane just before 9 p.m. Wednesday where Scott lived with his elderly parents. Dix told FOX 5 the deputies went to the house to conduct a welfare check after someone alerted officers that Scott seemed distressed.

Dix added that, when deputies arrived, Scott walked out of the back door of the home and pointed a gun at them. One of the officers fired two rounds, killing Scott, according to Dix.

The Sheriff's Office isn't releasing the deputy's name but says he has been on the force for a few weeks.

No deputies were hurt in the incident. Dix said Scott's parents were unharmed and asleep during the ordeal.
