Robbery suspect in custody after hours-long police standoff
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - A robbery suspect has been taken into custody after an hours-long SWAT standoff at a DeKalb County motel Monday morning.
According to police, officers were called to the Knights Inn on Lawrenceville Highway after a man allegedly robbed a Waffle House across the street, then fled to the motel where he was reportedly renting a room. Officers received the 911 call just before 3 a.m. Monday.
Police quickly evacuated motel residents. Some guests were still in their pajamas, others didn't even have time to grab a pair of shoes.
Investigators said the man kept the SWAT team at bay for hours. Officers deployed tear gas and flash-bang grenades just after 7 a.m. Then, by 8 a.m., the robbery suspect was taken into custody without incident.
The spokeswoman for DeKalb Police Department told reporters the suspect was wearing only underwear when police found him hiding in a bathroom.
"No one was injured during the Waffle House robbery and no shots were fired during the standoff with police," said spokewoman Shiera Campbell.
