A Lithonia mother said she no longer feels safe in her own home after her daughter was hit by a stray bullet.

The mother of three said two of her children were asleep when she heard rapid gunfire around 9:40 Wednesday night at the Windward Forest Apartments in Lithonia.

"When I woke up and ran in my children's room and grabbed them, my baby was crying and saying her leg was stinging and I knew automatically she had been shot in her leg," the victim's mother said.

DeKalb County Police said someone unloaded multiple shots into at least three apartments. Some of the bullets penetrated Kayla Leverette's apartment where her children were also sleeping but did not get hit.

"I heard one go through the room. So I jumped up real fast and went to my kids' room it was a bullet that went through the wall," Kayla Leverette.

The shooting victim's mom said her 4th grader, who she did not want to identify, is having a hard time but should recover from her injury.

"She is in a lot of pain. She can't walk. They are going to get her into therapy," she said.

Neighbors who live in Windward Forest Apartments just don't understand.

"That little girl was sleep and I just don't understand what is going through people's minds that you would do something like that," resident Antoinette Lawrence remarked.

DeKalb County Police said they have no information on who is responsible and would like for anyone who has any information to give them a call.
