Prepaid Card Phone Scam

The Coweta County Sheriff's Office is alerting the community that another prepaid card phone scam is taking place.

This time, the caller is using the name of actual personnel from the sheriff's office, according to Sheriff Mike Yeager.

Callers have reported that someone claiming to be Col. Lenn Wood from the sheriff's office has been attempting to scam callers with threats of outstanding warrants and fines, Yeager said.

"This is a similar situation we've had in the past where someone is attempting to extort money by using the excuse of outstanding legal fees," Yeager said. "However, he's using the names of actual employees of the sheriff's office."

According to Yeager, the caller has left messages urging recipients to call him back at 770-317-9976 where he claims to be working in the "Civil Process Division" of the sheriff's office. The caller is asking for prepaid cards to be used in order to avoid prosecution.

"No one from the sheriff's office will ever call you to collect money or alert you to fines and warrants," Yeager said.
