Police:Teen murder suspects are gang members arrested for dozens of crimes

ATLANTA - Two teenage brothers wanted in the shooting death of a man turned themselves into Atlanta Police Sunday.

Authorities said Charlie McDaniel, 16, and Isaac McDaniel, 15, shot and killed 50-year-old Anthony Brooks at a Shell gas station on Cambellton Road Thursday. Police said the boys had gotten into an argument with Brooks prior to the shooting.

Police added the brothers are gang members, who have been arrested for 30 other crimes, including robberies and auto thefts. Authorities said they have encountered the duo more than 100 times.

The teens surrendered to police at Hunter Hill First Missionary Baptist Church. The church pastor Christopher Wimberly said their mother called police. As seen on video, he prayed for her and her boys during the arrest.

"I was saddened. I was shocked. It was like a whirlwind," Wimberly said. "Both of them said, 'we are not running. We're turning ourselves in. We just came here for prayer.'"

FOX 5's Marissa Mitchell spoke with Brooks' mother and son Sunday following the suspects' arrest. They expressed gratitude for the public's support and detectives' work. Relatives also described Brooks as a loving grandfather and father who loved football and cartoons.

Brooks was also well known and beloved throughout his Ben Hill community.

Friend Marilyn Avery said Brooks helped everyone at the Shell gas station, by pumping gas and cleaning outside of the store. She, and others, say they don't understand why anyone would want to take his life.

"Everybody knew him at the store. It was like he was family," Avery said.

Community members have set up a makeshift memorial for Brooks at the Shell gas station where he was shot.

Police said the McDaniel brothers are in custody at the Youth Detention Center and are charged with murder.
