Police: Suspect arrested in kidnapping of 81-year-old woman

He's accused of  kidnapping an 81 year old woman over the weekend in Walton County then assaulting and stealing a getaway truck from a construction worker Monday morning in Barrow County.

"All I can tell you is, is that one bad person is in jail," said Sheriff Joe Chapman with the Walton County Sheriff's Office.

That person according to Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman is 29 year old John Christopher Calhoun.

The Sheriff said Calhoun's Crimes started sometime over the weekend at this Loganville home of 81 year old Beverly Johnson where he's alleged to have kidnapped the elderly woman.

"We don't know if there's any contact of them knowing each other we just don't know," said Sheriff Chapman.

He said Sunday afternoon Calhoun crashed her car in a flood detention ravine in Barrow County behind a theatre on highway 316 with her in the trunk.

She was rescued and hospitalized but somehow Calhoun eluded a infrared helicopter, deputies and Canines who searched into the night.

"We did a door to door canvas search knocked on every door within every subdivision within eyesight of this area," said GBI Special Agent in Charge Mike Ayers.

Investigators said at one point  Calhoun broke into this construction trailer near where the car was abandoned until a worker came inside Monday morning.

"When he did he attacked that gentleman and took his keys and some other things and then took his truck," said Sheriff Jud Smith of the Walton County Sheriff's Office.

He said investigators got a tip Calhoun had been spotted in Monroe. But Calhoun fled and was captured a few miles away in the man's stolen truck. He's now facing kidnapping, robbery and other charges.

"He is where he needs to be right now and if there is more to go with him. We'll put them with him. We just don't know yet," said Sheriff Chapman.

He said investigators are looking into whether or not other people may be involved.
