Police: 'slider' thieves targeting drivers again

As the summer heats up and criminals are looking for a target, Atlanta Police and Crime Stoppers remind drivers that the "slider" thieves that once terrorized gas stations at plenty of parts of the Metro are at it again.

Police said the latest victim was July 16, as a woman pumped gas at the Kroger fuel station off Glenwood Avenue SE in broad daylight. Surveillance shows the woman unaware of the man creeping into her passenger door and opening it before police said he stole her purse and took off.

The whole ordeal on video happened in 24 seconds, and the driver seen on the video seemed unaware the entire time that she became a victim.

Police warn drivers with the following tips at gas stations:

  • Take your key out of the ignition.
  • Lock your doors.
  • Remove your purse, cell phone, or other valuables from plain sight.
  • Stash valuables in your trunk prior to arriving at a gas station.
  • Place valuables in your dashboard, especially if it has a lock.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Atlanta Police or Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS.
