ACWORTH, Ga. - Investigators in Acworth are trying to find out who sexually assaulted a woman in her own home in the middle of the night.
Police said it happened at a home on Henry Court. It's a street where bicycles are strewn across lawns, kids play in each other's yards and everyone knows their neighbors.
"In this neighborhood, we watch out for everybody. The kids can come outside, you can sit in your house, and the men watch out for the kids and the women. We're a big family," said Shatoya Pratt who lives just down the street.
May 11, around 4:30 a.m., an urgent call was made to 911. Police said a frantic woman reported she was jolted awake and found a man in her bedroom. She told investigators the man sexually assaulted her.
"This is a horrific crime, whether she was targeted or whether it's stranger on stranger, this is someone who needs to be taken off the street," said Acworth Police Capt. Mark Cheatham.
Police raced to the home, but the assailant was gone when they arrived. Police said the woman couldn't identify the man nor could she give a good description of him.
"Because it was in the middle of the night and it was dark, she wasn't able to make out any distinguishing features," said Capt. Cheatham.
It's a terrifying situation that has neighbors on edge and on alert, and they're not letting their guard down until the attacker is caught.
"I pray for her, I hope she heals over the situation, I wouldn't want that on anyone," said Pratt.
