One man is dead and another is fighting for his life after a shootout at a convenience store late Monday night.

It happened after 11 p.m. Monday on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in southwest Atlanta. Police said two men got into an altercation at the Quick Mart, located near the Interstate 285 entrance ramp.  Investigators said some type of altercation escalated into gunfire, with both men shooting at each other

One man was hit in the head. Police found him at the store. Paramedics rushed the man to Grady Memorial Hospital, where doctors were trying to save his life.

The other man was also shot, possibly in the chest. He drove off in a red car but didn't get far. The car wrecked with another vehicle at the I-285 north ramp. The man in the red car died at the scene. Police said he succumbed to the gunshot wound, not crash. The other driver was not hurt.

Detectives aren't sure what triggered the initial dispute. They did recover weapons from both men and hope surveillance video sheds some light on exactly what happened.

No one else was caught in the crossfire.

The names of the men involved haven't been released.
