Police: man critical after officer-involved shooting in Gwinnett County

Authorities have identified a man who was rushed to a hospital Monday evening after being shot by a Gwinnett County police officer during a domestic dispute call near Lawrenceville. 

It happened on Alex Lane just outside the Lawrenceville city limits around 8 p.m. Gwinnett County Police said it started as a domestic dispute between a man and a woman. Police said they received initial reports which said a woman was assaulted by her ex-husband. She fled the home, but the man stayed, barricading himself in the home. Police said they were told the man was armed.

Investigators said the ex-husband, identified as 57-year-old William Payton, eventually came out and officers said he pointed a gun at them, forcing officers to open fire. Investigators said more than one officer discharged their weapons, striking Payton. He was rushed to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was asked to investigate the shooting.

No officers were injured in the shooting.
