The shooting happened in front of 81 Caboose Court, where police said a party was taking place.

According to the police report, the resident told officers said that she and other family and friends were in the backyard having the party, and she did not know any information about the child being shot.

"It's just sad," said Susie McKnew who lives in the neighborhood. "It could be anyone of our kids."

One young boy said he and another boy took the 6-year-old boy to his house on Cannonball Court after they saw him crying.

At first, officers thought the boy was shot in the chest with a BB or pellet gun, but police said after his mother took him to a local hospital, doctors determined the boy had been shot with a small caliber bullet.

Medics airlifted the boy to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. At last word, the boy was in stable condition.

"Seems like everyone over there was panicked," said Alonzo Moore who lives on Caboose Court. "I heard people yelling over here."

Police said the boy was walking and talking normally after the shooting, and they expect him to survive his injuries.

There are no suspects and no charges have been filed. The child's mother, Shannita Harrington urged the shooter to come forward.  "I just want them to know whoever did this to my son did not deserve this you need to turn yourself in."

As the search continues for the shooter Ni-Shawn's family says they're just grateful he survived the ordeal.

His grandmother Anita Harrington told FOX 5 News, " I thank God my grandson is ok  pray that this bullet don't affect him but they say that he that the bullet went through his rib so his rib is broke."

Police have no suspect or motive for the shooting.

In a news release, Gwinnett Police said their lead investigator is still seeking any information in this case and it’s imperative that the suspect is identified and arrested for this criminal act.

Anyone with information about the shooter is urged to call Gwinnett County Police or Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS.
