An employee at an Atlanta jewelry store shot and killed an armed robber Wednesday, according to Atlanta Police. The shooting happened at around 2:30 p.m. at Cachet Fine Jewelry at 2860 Piedmont Road Northeast.

When officers arrived, a store employee told them a man armed with a handgun tried to rob the store, and the employee shot the robber in self-defense. Medics rushed the wounded man to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he died.

Police said it was not immediately clear whether the would-be robber fired any shots. However, investigators said they believe the robber did have his gun in his hand. After he was shot, he left the store and collapsed on the sidewalk outside, according to police.

A father and son were both working at the jewelry store at the time. Neither of them was injured. FOX 5’s George Franco reports that the store employee who shot the would-be robber did not face charges Wednesday evening.
