Teen killed at SW Atlanta apartments

Atlanta police are trying to identify a gunman who killed a teenager at a southwest Atlanta apartment complex on Monday night.

Paramedics rushed the teen to a local hospital in critical condition. He later died from his injuries, police said.

Video from a nearby Ring camera captured the sound of multiple gunshots. In the footage, a gun can be seen being fired — a stark reminder of the sudden and violent nature of the shooting.

What we don't know:

Police have not released the victim's name. It is not clear if the teen lived at the complex where the shooting took place.

Detectives at the scene were not able to give any details about the investigation.

As of Tuesday, no arrests had been made. Atlanta police continue to investigate and ask anyone with information to contact them.

What they're saying:

"It was over a piece of jewelry or something and he was trying to run off," said a witness identified only as R. Ridley. She was sitting outside the complex when the gunfire erupted. Ridley said her daughter and grandchildren live in the apartments.

"There’s a lot that happens over in this area and it’s just too much," she added.

Ridley recalled stepping off a MARTA bus to find the entire area roped off with crime scene tape. She noted that the nearby bus stop, which was recently repaired by MARTA, had itself been damaged by gunfire just a month ago.

"This under here. That under there. All that was shot up," she said, pointing to parts of the shelter.

Residents told FOX 5 that the people involved in the shooting did not live at the complex.

Residents told FOX 5 that the people involved in the shooting did not live at the complex.

"That was unfortunate to see someone so young get done like this and we don’t know why," said Othniel Figaro, who lives nearby. "It puts something in you to want to be better, to want to do better for people."

Figaro said he hopes to one day run for city council to help bring more programs and resources for young people in the community.

"Especially when people are young, they out here with not a lot of things to do, not a lot of opportunities. There needs to be more programs for the youth," he said.

For now, Ridley offered a simple plea: "Just be safe over here. Just be safe. Just be safe."
