Police chase in Clayton County connected to murder suspects

Stockbridge Police, Clayton County Police, and Henry County deputies were spotted at several locations, with the most significant activity centered around the Kroger store on Fairview Road on Monday night. Shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday, Clayton County Police confirmed that the activity in Henry County was related to a homicide on Monday in the 7600 block of Connell Drive in the Jonesboro area. Police were able to arrest one of the potential suspects during the chase. Another person is still on the run.

A large law enforcement presence was reported overnight in Henry County, involving multiple agencies across county lines. FOX 5 has learned that was connected to a murder investigation in Clayton County. 

What we know:

Stockbridge Police, Clayton County Police and Henry County deputies were spotted at several locations, with the most significant activity centered around the Kroger store on Fairview Road in Stockbridge, which is in Henry County.

A photojournalist also saw police drones flying over a nearby cemetery, indicating an active investigation in the area. 

Shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday, Clayton County Police confirmed that the activity in Henry County was related to a homicide on Monday in the 7600 block of Connell Drive in the Jonesboro area. 

Clayton County police responded to a fatal shooting at approximately 5:45 p.m. Aug. 4 in the 7600 block of Connell Drive of Jonesboro. A man was pronounced dead at the scene. He was later identified by the Clayton County Medical Examiner as 33-year-old Demontez Grier of Jonesboro. 

At some point, there was a chase involving the potential suspects in the shooting.

That chase eventually ended on Centennial Drive near Fairview Road in Stockbridge, which is where a photojournalist for FOX 5 Atlanta observed multiple police officers from three agencies and a police drone. 

Police were able to arrest one of the potential suspects during the chase. 

What they're saying:

One neighbor, Judy Savage, who asked us not to show her on camera, said she witnessed the shooting firsthand.

"Like a nightmare. It didn’t really look real, you know, but it was," Savage said. "I see this guy shoot this other guy in the driveway. Very scary. I wouldn’t want to see it again and I wish I hadn’t seen that."

At one point during the chase, a vehicle crashed into a backyard. Nia Simone Parks, who lives nearby, said she heard the commotion just as she was about to go to sleep.

"I was in the bed getting ready to go to sleep and I heard loud sirens, but I thought it was on the TV at first until I looked out the window," she said. "As soon as I looked out, the guy just ran. He had on like a hoodie so you couldn’t really see."

What's next:

According to the Clayton County Police Department, the other person is still on the run and is considered armed and dangerous.

What we don't know:

Police have not released any information about what could have led up to the shooting. Additionally, they have not released the names and ages of the potential suspects.
