Police have arrested the mother of a 4-year-old boy found shot in a southwest Atlanta apartment.

Patricia Todd, 41, has been charged with aggravated assault, cruelty to children and tampering with evidence.

Atlanta Police said the shooting happened around 10:00 a.m. Tuesday in the 500 block of University Avenue.

Police found the young boy in the kitchen after receiving a 911 call. He was rushed to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston in critical condition.

"It's a little more disheartening for investigators, as anyone. Most of our folks have kids so of course it’s going to touch your heart anytime you are dealing with an injury so grave to a child to such a young person," said Major Adam Lee III.

Investigators spent several hours following the shooting speaking with the mother, who police said was the only other known person in the 2-room apartment at the time of the shooting, at police headquarters to try to determine what happened.

Todd was booked into the Fulton County Jail. She waived her first court apperaance at the Fulton County jail on Wednesday.
