Midtown Atlanta sees rash of robberies in July

July is not over yet and the Midtown Ponce Security Alliance has counted six cases of pedestrian robberies this month in the Midtown Atlanta area.

"We are seeing not just people [robbed] coming from the bars," says Guy Drexinger, the new president of the MPSA. "Be alert of a vehicle circling while you're standing in front of your home.”

At least two of the most recent robberies documented by Atlanta Police were committed as the victims were standing in front of their homes.

The MPSA, working along with Atlanta Police, plans to add more patrols during the hours of 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., which is when many of these robberies are committed, Drexinger says.

There are also discussions of placing MPSA-designated security cameras with signs to alert robbers of surveillance in the neighborhoods.

Several suspects in some of the recent robberies have been apprehended. The MPSA is collecting letters from residents for Community Impact Statements, to be read before a judge during sentencing to give these suspects longer sentences.

Drexinger shows us one letter, which reads, "Whoever robs a Midtowner robs us all."
