ATLANTA - Residents in metro Atlanta are bracing for potentially severe weather this afternoon, with heavy rain, damaging winds, and a low chance of tornadoes expected to impact the area. 

While there’s no need for alarm, meteorologists warn that the weather could cause disruptions, especially during the evening commute.

Current Conditions

As of this afternoon, rain is falling steadily across Atlanta, with temperatures at 66°F. A narrow band of heavy rain has moved north from Fayette and Clayton counties, sweeping through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and heading into Buckhead and Sandy Springs. While lightning activity is minimal, isolated strong storms have been reported south of the Rome area.

Severe Weather Outlook

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Level 2 risk for areas south of Atlanta, including Heard, Coweta, and Henry counties. While the chance of a tornado remains low, there is a 40% likelihood of a tornado watch being issued for southwestern parts of Georgia. Damaging winds and small hail are also possible as the line of storms moves through the region.

Timeline and Rainfall

The severe weather threat is expected to persist until about 8 p.m. tonight. Rain will continue into the overnight hours, with totals ranging from 1 to 2 inches across the area. Some locations may see isolated higher amounts.

Tomorrow’s forecast brings a shift in temperatures, with warm conditions in the morning turning colder by the afternoon. Thursday’s high is predicted to reach only 48°F. Looking ahead, the weekend may bring a chance of scattered showers late Saturday night into Sunday.
