Man shot, killed at Gwinnett County apartment

Gwinnett County Police are trying to solve the weekend murder of a man at his apartment complex. The man's body was found in front of Building 13 at the Indian Trail Apartments in Lilburn.

Sam Martin lives close by and said he was watching television when he heard four to six shots fired Sunday evening.

“I heard sounds, sounded like gunshots but I didn't want to believe they were gunshots,” said Martin.

FOX 5 News obtained the frantic 911 call. A woman's screams can be heard in the background as a man told the operator “Someone's been shot, I don't know if he's alive or not.”

When police arrived they found a man face down in the parking lot. He was already dead. Monday Gwinnett County Police identified the man as Vernie Burroughs. He was 43 years old and lived at the complex on Indian Trail Lilburn Road. Investigators don't know how many times he was hit, or who fired the deadly shots. Investigators are searching for a motive and witnesses.

“We're unsure right now if we have any witnesses on scene, or anyone cooperating with law enforcement,” said Sgt. Brian Doan.

Throughout the day Monday, security guards were stationed at both entrances to the apartment complex. They checked every car that drove in. Gwinnett Police said this is now a Crime Stoppers case and want anyone who knows something about this shooting to give them a call.

Anyone with information leading to an arrest and indictment in the case can receive up to $2000. The number for Crime Stoppers is 404-577-TIPS (8477).
