Man in custody after crashing car during chase involving GSP trooper

ATLANTA - A man was taken into custody early Thursday morning after crashing his car during a chase involving a Georgia State Patrol trooper. 

The accident happened shortly after 2 a.m. on Atlanta's Downtown Connector in the northbound lanes near 17th Street. 

According to the GSP, it all started when a trooper stopped a green Acura for speeding and smelled a strong odor of alcohol. Following field sobriety tests, investigators said the trooper tried to arrest the driver for driving under the influence, but the driver pulled away from him. 

The GSP said the driver, identified as 34-year-old Lawrence Lampkin, managed to get back inside his Acura after resisting being put in handcuffs. That's when, according to investigators, the trooper used his stun gun, but Lampkin was able to remove the Taser prongs and headed northbound on Interstate 85. 

The trooper chased Lampkin, who eventually lost control in a construction zone on I-85. He hit a concrete wall on the east shoulder and then crossed all northbound lanes before coming to a complete rest on the west shoulder. 

Investigators said the trooper took Lampkin into custody following the crash. He was then taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. 

The crash blocked traffic for some time, but the scene was cleared about an hour later.
