How did inmate get deputy's key?

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. - An inmate at the Fulton County Jail got hold of a deputy's key. The unidentified prisoner was able to open cell doors anytime he wanted to.

But the assistant jail commander said there was never any danger any of the inmates could go free.

Lt. Colonel Adam Lee III explained inmates periodically are allowed in the common area called the housing pod. But that unauthorized key does not open the large electronic sliding door that provides access to the rest of the facility.

Investigators are back tracking to see how long that key might have been missing and which staffer was supposed to have it.

Lee did not identify the inmate nor the employee. He said it is important to the investigation not to release too much information before they can get to the bottom of what took place.

Before the incident, the sheriff had already purchased an electronic key management system which staffers are testing and will soon implement. With the technology, every key can be tracked. The access to the key box is tied to the employee's assignment and responsibility.
