Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has chosen Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia as her vice-presidential running mate. The announcement made in a text message and on Twitter followed a campaign swing through Florida on Friday.

During her remarks at a campaign event in Tampa, Clinton described the Republican Convention as "perversely flattering", saying that GOP speakers spent more time talking about her than the problems facing the country.

Clinton said that Republican nominee Donald Trump offered a "dark and divisive" vision of the future, focusing on "fear and anger and resentment" rather than solutions to challenges he highlighted in his acceptance speech Thursday night.

A joint appearance including Clinton and Kaine is expected Saturday in Florida. The Democratic National Convention opens Monday in Philadelphia, where Clinton will accept her party's presidential nomination.
