The skies are not so friendly in the new thriller "Flight Risk":

The skies are not so friendly in a new thriller by Oscar-winning director Mel Gibson.

"Flight Risk" stars Mark Wahlberg as a pilot transporting an Air Marshal (played by "Downton Abbey" star Michelle Dockery) and a fugitive (Topher Grace) — but over the course of a very tense 90 minutes, it becomes clear that Wahlberg’s pilot has a deadly ulterior motive.

"It’s a blast," says Wahlberg about playing a character that turns out to be the movie’s ultimate villain. "You think of movies like ‘The Shining’ or ‘Cape Fear,’ those are the most memorable things about the movie."

The Oscar-nominated actor continues, "I wanted to push it with the haircut with the voices … and just make him as nasty as possible."

"Flight Risk" opened at the top spot at the box office over the weekend, giving Wahlberg yet another success in his decades-long career as an actor. This year marks the 30th anniversary of "The Basketball Diaries," the 1995 drama in which Wahlberg first gained the attention of many critics and film fans.

"I was lucky enough that I grew up watching movies with my dad; I was introduced to the likes of Jimmy Cagney, John Garfield, Robert Ryan, Steve McQueen," says Wahlberg. "So, I was always a student of the game. And then, when I came into making movies, I really felt like I found my niche …and 30 years later, I'm still fortunate enough to do it."

"Flight Risk" is now open in theaters across the nation.
