Georgia deputy shoots, wounds suspect at apartment complex
MACON, Ga. (AP) — A 24-year-old man was shot after authorities say he pointed a gun at a deputy in middle Georgia.
A Bibb County Sheriff's Office release says Deputy George Witherspoon was investigating a report of shots fired Thursday night at a Macon apartment complex.
The release says Witherspoon found DeMichael Wilmore holding a gun outside a pickup truck in the complex parking lot. It says Wilmore refused Witherspoon's command to drop the gun, pointing it at the deputy.
Witherspoon fired one shot, hitting Wilmore in the arm. Wilmore was taken to Medical Center, Navicent Health, where he was in stable condition.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating.
The races of the deputy and the suspect are not known. Race hasn't been raised as a factor, but the question comes amid a national debate about the deaths of black men at the hands of police.
