Georgia Aquarium, SeaWorld rescue dolphin after shark attack

A dolphin that was attacked by a shark is now undergoing rehabilitation at SeaWorld after a rescue operation by the Georgia Aquarium Conservation Field Station and the SeaWorld Orlando Rescue Team.

Officials say that last week the teams were called by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to help rescue the 265 lb. female Atlantic bottlenose dolphin that was stranded at Ponte Vedra Beach in Florida.

The dolphin had life-threatening injuries with multiple bite wounds to her body and right pectoral flipper.

After an assessment, the teams helped transported the animal to SeaWorld Orlando’s Cetacean Rehabilitation Facility for rehabilitation.

"She's a fighter," SeaWorld's Dr. Lara Croft said.

The dolphin is now gaining strength and is able to swim unsupported at the facility. The team is providing 24-hour care and evaluating the sub-adult dolphin's vitals.
